This past November (2010) myself and another director from the B.C. Real Estate Association had the opportunity to visit the town of Greensburg, Kansas. Approximately 4 years ago this entire town was destroyed by a tornado.
The citizens took advantage of having to rebuild their beloved town from bottom up and chose to enbrace ' Green Inovations ' They built the town's official buildings - including the school, hospital and city hall to the LEED Certifications. From this experience a society was formed called Greensburg Greentown who are advancing technologies for a much Greener Environment from building to recycling.
Take the time and look at this website: greensburggreentown.org Their work is so inspiring.
